2016 Poem a Day Challenge #8

April is National Poetry Writing Month! The challenge is to write a poem every day of the month. I’m using prompts from Writer’s Digest, NaPoWriMo and Kelli Russell Agodon’s list. Occasionally, I may use my own prompt ideas as well.

Today’s Prompt:

Write a defensive poem.

The Language of Peaches

She used to tell me that
wind is the music of forests,
rain the chant of the sea,
and sweet juice the language of peaches.

It was how she said, “I love you,”
but also that she had no home,
and I could only say
what I felt a garden would ask of winter
to stop a crushing storm.
