2016 Poem a Day Challenge #15

April is National Poetry Writing Month! The challenge is to write a poem every day of the month. I’m using prompts from Writer’s Digest, NaPoWriMo and Kelli Russell Agodon’s list. Occasionally, I may use my own prompt ideas as well.

Today’s Prompt:

Write a “back to the office” poem.

Indentured

Today we are still at the beach
the path to freedom wound under waves;
the ocean, a pavement of trials
and curing salt, but wide, and free.
I will leave here and think of Mapplethorpe
my chest in a sailor’s knot
“No, Patti, no…”
anxious and grieving for seeing
what I relinquish every time
I choose my chains again.
