2016 Poem a Day Challenge #25

April is National Poetry Writing Month! The challenge is to write a poem every day of the month. I’m using prompts from Writer’s Digest, NaPoWriMo and Kelli Russell Agodon’s list. Occasionally, I may use my own prompt ideas as well.

Today’s Prompt:

Take the phrase “Important (blank),” replace the blank with a word or phrase, make the new phrase the title of your poem, and then, write the poem.

Important Platitudinal Subtexts That No One Ever Tells You

Be Yourself
but only if I can approve of your choices

Speak your truth
but only in harmony with the prominent voices

You can do anything you want
if you can ever get free

You are special
but I will still always choose me

Everything happens for a reason
good luck ever knowing

Follow your passion
as long as it makes sense to me where you’re going

Time heals all wounds
but it could just kill you first

It gets better
but this still may not be the worst

You won’t get more than you can handle
we have to believe in things we know aren’t true

I’m happy for your success
fuck this, fuck me, fuck you
